THE QUEEN’S GREEN CANOPY
This initiative, organised and overseen by Wootton Parish Council in partnership with the Crown Estate and Forest of Marston Vale was held on Saturday 22nd January 2022. This was a unique tree planting event, held to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee and benefit future generations. 70 trees were planted – one for each year of Her Majesty’s reign, on land owned by Wootton Parish Council at Lorraine Road cemetery and the Crown Estate. The Forest of Marston Vale supported the event by providing the trees through Defra’s ‘Trees for Climate’ campaign – the trees being a mix of oak, wild cherry, rowan, hornbeam, field maple and silver birch. A Commemoration Board was unveiled by the Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Helen Nellis, who also planted the first tree. A second tree was planted by Gareth Lloyd, Chairman of Wootton Parish Council and the remaining trees were planted by members of Wootton’s community, including representatives from the churches, schools, girls and boys brigade, plus scout and guiding groups.

It is hoped this generation and those that follow will stand at the Commemoration Board and appreciate the trees as they establish, grow and mature.
