Average Speed Cameras
Our aim is not to make money for Central Government through fines, but for everyone to drive slowly and safely through the parish. Even thou the majority have slowed down, there are still a few who have more money than sense and not a care for other road users.
Those who live on or walk along Fields Road and Cranfield Road will have noticed the impact these cameras have had. Vehicles are moving more slowly and the noise levels have reduced also.
The parish council has to work with Bedfordshire Police and Bedford Borough Council to get them installed. The parish council is aware that other roads have been suggested (and agrees with most), however nothing can move forward without police backing.

Our aim is to make the roads through Wootton safer for everyone. By installing Average Speed Cameras we hope to encourage drivers to drive within the speed limits.

How Average Speed Camera work
In the diagram below there are three cameras. Let’s assume the speed limit is 30mph and the distance between cameras is as follows:
- Cameras One and Two: 800 meters;
- Cameras Two and Three: 400 meters.
If you travelled at exactly 30mph it would take one minute to travel between cameras one and two, and 30 seconds to travel between cameras two and three *.
When a vehicle passes camera one, a picture is taken and the number plate is recorded along with the time of day. As the vehicle passes cameras two and three, a further picture is taken and the number plate and time are again recorded. The time taken by the vehicle to travel between all cameras is then calculated. If the calculated time is quicker than the time set between cameras (as noted above *), the recorded information is sent to the police, who will examine the evidence before issuing a ticket.
